on stigmata
In his book, ‘The Mark of Shame’, Stephen Hinshaw refers to the use of language as being preoccupied with stigmatisation of mental illness in the everyday life. What are some of the most degradable terms to describe a person or a group of people? – crazy, wacko, psycho, nut, mental etc. The list could go on and on. Children learn from young age to use terms degrading people with a mental disorder. Hinshaw states that the words “retard” and “crazy” are one of the first terms used by preschool aged children to discriminate socially rejected peers.
